4 Days Rwanda Wildlife Safari & Chimpanzee Trekking
This 4-day Rwanda safari combines Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park in one compact itinerary.
The tour includes a Lake Ihema boat cruise, a full game drive in Akagera, the Nyungwe canopy walk, and chimpanzee trekking in one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. It is a private tour with transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle and support from an experienced driver-guide.
Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park — Lake Ihema Boat Cruise
Your Izuba Tours driver-guide picks you up from your hotel or residence in Kigali after breakfast.
You then drive east to Akagera National Park, a journey of around 2.5 hours through Rwanda’s Eastern Province. On arrival, check in at the lodge and have time for lunch and a short rest.
In the afternoon, enjoy a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema. This is a good opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and the peaceful lakeside scenery of Akagera.
Overnight: Mantis Akagera Game Lodge
Meal plan: Bed & Breakfast
Day 2: Akagera Game Drive — Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, you start a full-day game drive in Akagera National Park.
Akagera is Rwanda’s main savannah park and is home to elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, baboons, and many bird species. With luck, you may also see lions, rhinos, or leopards.
Later in the afternoon, you drive back to Kigali for overnight.
Overnight: One Click Hotel
Meal plan: Bed & Breakfast
Day 3: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park — Canopy Walk
After breakfast, your driver-guide picks you up again and drives south-west towards Nyungwe National Park.
The route passes through Rwanda’s green hills, farms, and countryside. On arrival at Nyungwe, you continue to the park reception for briefing before starting the canopy walk.
The canopy walk is a suspended bridge through the forest, offering wide views over the rainforest canopy. After the experience, you transfer to the hotel for check-in and rest.
Overnight: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel
Meal plan: Bed & Breakfast
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking — Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, you enter Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking.
With park guides, you hike through the forest in search of chimpanzee communities. You may hear them before you see them, as their calls travel through the forest. Nyungwe is also rich in birds, monkeys, and beautiful rainforest scenery.
After the trek, your driver-guide transfers you back to Kigali for hotel, residence, or airport drop-off.
