Akagera National Park

Rwanda’s savannah safari

Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah national park and the country’s main destination for classic wildlife viewing. Located in eastern Rwanda, along the border with Tanzania, the park offers open plains, lakes, wetlands, woodland, and rolling hills.

This is where Rwanda feels completely different from the green mountain landscapes of Volcanoes and Nyungwe. In Akagera, the experience is wide, open, and quiet — with chances to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and many bird species.

Akagera is also Rwanda’s Big Five park, with lions and rhinos reintroduced as part of its conservation success story. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the park gives travellers a real safari experience within a short distance from Kigali.

Akagera Safari Day Trip

Izuba Tours offers an Akagera Safari Day Trip for travellers who want a real wildlife experience without staying overnight.

You leave Kigali early in the morning and drive east towards Akagera National Park. Inside the park, the landscape changes quickly: open savannah, lakes, wetlands, woodland, and wide views towards Tanzania.

During the game drive, your guide helps you look for wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelopes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and many bird species. If time allows, the day can also include a boat safari on Lake Ihema.

This itinerary is ideal for visitors with limited time in Rwanda who still want to experience a classic safari day.
