Rwanda’s lakeside escape
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s main lakeside destination and one of the most relaxing places to visit in the country. Located along Rwanda’s western border, the lake offers calm water, green hills, small towns, islands, fishing boats, and beautiful views.
After gorilla trekking, rainforest walks, or safari, Lake Kivu gives travellers a softer and slower experience. It is ideal for relaxing, photography, boat trips, coffee visits, short walks, and enjoying Rwanda from the water.
The main towns around the lake include Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu. Each area has its own character, but all offer a peaceful contrast to Rwanda’s national parks.

You leave Kigali early and travel west towards Lake Kivu. The road passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills and countryside before reaching the lake area.

Practical Information
Kigali is easy to move around with a private driver-guide. Roads are good, the city is safe by regional standards, and most hotels, restaurants and main attractions are within comfortable driving distance.

Yellow fever
